The water, the 'polders' and the canals
The water, the 'polders' and the canals
Discover the story of the region
The water has shaped the region around Volendam and Amsterdam. That is why the story of the water flows through the hotel, allowing you to experience a piece of nostalgia in every room.
Café & Patisserie Zoetwaeter
Food & Drink
In the lobby, your journey through the story begins at Café & Patisserie Zoetwaeter, meaning 'Sweet Water'. Here, you can calmly enjoy a delicious coffee with a freshly baked pastry. There is also a 24/7 shop to choose something sweet. A nod to the beginning of the story. Because where the IJsselmeer is now located, there were small freshwater lakes until the 11th century.
Restaurant ZYLT
Food & Drink
In this area, around the 15th century, the surrounding villages were founded on the former Zuyderzee. This salty inland sea was created by storm surges from the North Sea, which flooded the freshwater lakes. A new era with brackish water began - a little salty and a little sweet. Just like at Restaurant ZYLT, meaning 'salinization'. Where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Bar 1480
Open from November
It was a bustling period, with water overflowing the banks and salting the soil. This caused agricultural problems, but at the same time, the water also brought an abundance of new fish, such as the typical Dutch herring. This made the fishing villages increasingly busy.
Celebrate this exciting buzz with a sparkling cocktail at Bar 1480.
Versatile meeting rooms
Open from November
Are you just a passing-through business sailor? Then take a seat in one of the rooms, named after the flat-bottomed fishing boats called 'botters'. This type of fishing boat received its standard design from the 17th century: a flat bottom suitable for shallow waters. Trade and the region flourished. Which you now ensure with an inspiring meeting or a spectacular event.
Outdoor location 'de Zegen'
Open from April 2026
These 'botters' had a large trawl net, which was set in a wide arc around the fish. To catch the fish, the net was slowly drawn closer, or 'ingezegend', meaning hauled in. This created an important and cheerful moment. Therefore, you can soon celebrate lavishly at Outdoor location de Zegen with a drink or BBQ. But you can also celebrate the blessing, also a 'zegen' in Dutch, of marriage here!
A wonderful overnight stay
Deluxe rooms
In the 20th century, the 'Afsluitdijk' (dike) created the current 'IJsselmeer' (lake). This change brought calm over the water, but also fewer fish. The fishing villages became places for recreation. Where Van der Valk Hotel Volendam has been hospitably contributing since 1973. Just like the always moving water, it was now time for us to change as well. A beautiful new hotel with a touch of the region in every detail.

Tales on tiles
art
This story of nature and the region has been brought to life by artist Sebastiaan. His unique drawings can be found throughout the hotel. The former tattoo artist created beautiful tiles with designs of water, shells, mermaids, boats, birds, and the dike of Volendam. He also designed the wallpaper of the hotel rooms, the logos, and much more. You can discover more of this talented creative on Instagram.
